"Cleveland County Guardian ad Litem has a new home"| Shelby Star

The Guardian ad Litem Association of Lincoln County in Distrcit 27B raised funds to build the "One Step at a Time Park;" a beautiful park space donated to the Department of Social Services and dedicated to the foster children of Lincoln County. This beautiful park provides an open space for visits between parents and their children.

In 2017 District 27B wanted to do something to honor the volunteer advocates that make up the NC Guardian ad Litem program. They planted yellow rose bushes in front of the Cleveland County Courthouse, and chose yellow as a symbol of hope, the feeling that runs strong among the volunteer advocates of our program.

GAL Child Advocate Testimonies......

My journey as a volunteer with the Guardian ad Litem program has been life affirming for me.

I believe that every child deserves someone who believes in them, and who truly has their best interest at heart.

This should be a given, but sadly sometimes it is not their reality. My work as a GAL volunteer allows me to get to know these children, and to stand up and speak for them in a complicated and frightening process that these children never asked to be a part of.

These children are in the foster care system, and their entire world can shift in a moment. Everyone they knew today, could be gone tomorrow, and new faces, homes, and schools take their place. We, as GAL volunteers can be the stability and caring force in their lives, standing for them.

Please consider volunteering with the Guardian ad Litem program, and stand up for a child, and believe in them. I promise that you will not regret investing your time into these children, who simply need you to care and speak for them.

"Today was both a happy and sad day.One of my first cases as a GAL began 10 years ago, with a young boy who had been through more in his short life

than most of us will ever endure. Today I attended his 18th birthday party.  I have been with him, his family, and awesome social worker, as we all tried to do what

was best for him and the rest of his life. It was wonderful to see the polite, sweet young man he has become, even though he’s haunted by many troubles. It was a

happy occasion because he is in a wonderful placement with a very caring person who has struggled alongside him for the past six years and is dedicated to be with

him for the long haul. I left him today knowing he will be loved and cared for.  As of  today I am released as his GAL, but I will forever be his biggest advocate and friend."
